University Library in Bratislava (ULIB) is the oldest and largest scientific library in Slovakia, which was founded in 1919 and until 1954 served as a national library. It was amongst the first cultural and educational institutions that were founded in the new Czechoslovak Republic on the territory of Slovakia in support of the emerging higher education and science. Despite its original intention to become a university library of the oldest Slovak university, it has never become an integral part of it, even though it has so far enjoyed great interest among students and the academic community. The University Library in Bratislava retained its original name, which also describes the universal nature of its library collections. At present it is a modern scientific library serving the whole country. In the jubilee year 2019, the University Library in Bratislava commemorates its 100th anniversary.
Under the auspices of Ľubica Laššáková, Ministress of Culture of the Slovak Republic
Libraries of the V4 Countries and their Strategies in the Context of A Library Manifesto for Europe
Successful International, European and National Projects in the V4 Libraries
Developing Projects and Perspectives of International Cooperation of V4+ Libraries
The Colloquium project, based on the initiative of then Slovak Minister of Culture, was approved by the Ministers of Culture of V4 countries at their 13th meeting in April 2005 in Banská Bystrica. By this decision, they confirmed the need to join the European discussion on the digitization of library resources and building a virtual European library. The main topic of Colloquiums is the cooperation of heritage institutions – libraries, museums, galleries and archives in the field of preservation, digitization and especially complex, flexible and direct access to cultural and academic heritage within united Europe.
Following the 7th Colloquium of library and information experts of V4+ countries, the organizational guarantee of the event – University Library in Bratislava – will prepare and publish a reviewed almanac, also available in electronic format at the Colloquium’s website. All lecturers and participants will be informed upon the publication of the almanac.
